Memukur - Dalem Puri

The Memukur ceremony is performed for the deceased after their cremation. It can occur days, week, or even years after the cremation (ngaben) on a date chosen by a priest. The Ngaben is to cleanse the worldly body by fire with ashes placed in the sea or nearby river. The memukur is to cleanse the spirit for the afterlife. Goa Lawah - which is near the sea - is seen as a powerful temple to begin the rite and journey of memukur.

The next step is often the temple, Dalem Puri. Dalem Puri is similarly considered a powerful temple for memukur and is very near the final site of this rite, Besakih, the Mother Temple of Bali. It is often the next step after Goa Lawah before the final step at Besakih.

Teresa's mural is at a school very close to both Dalem Puri and Besakih. So we spent a couple weeks there while she and our friend Emon were painting.
