Bali was originally connected to Asia. Islands east of Bali were connected to Australia. The Wallace Line is the demarcation between the two geographies and runs between Bali and the nearest island west, Lombok, a distance of only 22 miles. There is a deep trench between the islands, so there was never a land bridge. Animals and plants are different on each side, which seems logical, but interestingly birds and fish are also different and do not cross the line, being separated by ocean currents and different climate and geographical features..
